REGULAR DAILY ACTIVITIES

Every Monday: Begin class by copying weekly vocabulary terms and definitions
(log to be completed, for credit, collected on Thursday with quiz, by adding four synonyms for every term – no late logs will be accepted for credit)
Every Tuesday: Begin class by copying weekly spelling words
(log to be completed, for credit, collected on Friday with quiz, by hand-writing each word a total of eight times – no late logs will be accepted for credit)
Every Wednesday: First twenty-five minutes of class used to EITHER individually and silently read Lit Circle Novel and respond in Book Log OR Meet in Lit Circle Group to complete discussion and weekly Lit Circle Activity (silent reading and lit circle meetings will alternate every other week) (five points lost from final book report project every time Lit Circle Novel is not in class with student on Wednesdays)
Every Thursday: Begin class by completing weekly vocabulary quiz
(weekly vocabulary log due, for credit, with four synonyms added for each term – logs due at the time of quiz, without exception)
Every Friday: Begin class by completing weekly spelling quiz
(weekly spelling log due, for credit, with each word written a total of eight times – logs due at time of quiz, without exception)
*All logs (vocabulary and spelling) MUST be hand-written.
Word-processed logs will NOT be accepted for credit.
Students who are not prepared for daily class activities will be considered to have poor class participation, since HHS pass policy is that students are only to be issued passes in the cases of emergencies, and forgotten class materials is not considered an emergency.
INTERESTING INFORMATION: After calculating an average of last year's Vocabulary and Spelling Quiz Scores, the following was found: Students who regulary completed their Vocabulary Study Logs (required, as a five-point assignment), on average, earned a grade of B- or better, whereas students who regulary did not complete these logs, on average, earned a 49% or below (an E) .
Likewise, students who regularly completed their Spelling Study Logs (also required, as a five-point assignment), on average, earned a grade of A- or better, whereas students who did not regularly complete these logs, on average, earned a grade of D- or E.
This is important information to keep in mind as students begin second semester, as Vocabulary and Spelling Quizzes make up 45 of your students points in Ninth Grade English every week.
IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND: Since all the above detailed activities occur every week, on the exact same days, they are never a surprise. Also, all the information for all of the above daily activities can always be found 1) posted in the classroom, 2) on the class website, and 3) from other classmates. Therefore, completion of quizzes is ALWAYS required on the day they are given in class, regardless of previous attendance during the week.
Therefore, if you are absent on Monday, you already know that you missed copying the week’s vocabulary terms and definitions, and must access the information and complete your log prior to class on Thursday, as you will be required to complete the quiz and turn in your log for credit. This requirement is also true for weekly spelling expectations.
If you are absent on a Wednesday, you know that you missed writing in your in-class log, and must access the journal topic choices from any of the previously listed locations and complete your entry, as journals will be randomly scored, based on completion, without warning, and all missing entries will result in a loss of points.
