Personal 'Theme' (Poem) Assignment

Due Thursday, September 13th

Who are you? 

How do you see yourself?

How do others see you?

How would you like others to see you?

         Please construct a short poem that expresses your personal voice.  The poem can build upon ideas, images, and themes you explored in the above questions.  You should use Langston Hughes's poem as a model. 

When you have completed the poem, please construct a two to three sentence definition, relating to your voice and your poem, of voice that uses some of the qualities of voice we discussed in class.  Think about: What qualities make a writer's voice forceful, distinctive, and memorable?  Use examples from Hughes's poem and your own to illustrate and support the qaulities you believe create a voice that is forceful, distinctive, and memorable. 

Please be prepared to share your poem with the class.
