It is designed in order for non-Spanish speakers to acquire more fluency in the Spanish language. Special emphasis is given to listening and speaking through oral presentations and listening activities. Also studied, are the culture and the history of the Hispanic world.

Attendance

Your daily attendance (physically and mentally) is extremely important to your achievement in Spanish class!  If you arrive to class on time and participate, you will build a strong foundation for success.  A majority of class time is spent doing activities together as a group or with partners.  If you miss class, you miss the activity and new information.  The student hand book has an attendance policy that will be followed in this class.

Grading

Quizzes & Tests = 50% of the total marking period grade.

Quizzes and tests will be announced with plenty of time to prepare.  Each chapter will have at least one or two quizzes on vocabulary or grammar points.  Tests will be given upon completion of a unit/chapter of study.  These formats will vary.  Please be aware that if you are present the day that a test or quiz is announced, you are expected to take it ON THAT SCHEDULED DAY, even if you are not in the class the day before.  (i.e. On Friday, a test is announced for the following FRIDAY.  You must take the test Friday even if you are not in class on the THURSDAY before).

Homework, Trabajo de Clase (TDC) and Projects = 30% of the total marking period grade

Students will be given frequent homework assignments to reinforce class instruction.  Full credit will be awarded for assignments that are correct, COMPLETE, labeled, on time, and a product of the student’s effort.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!  Each day a Trabajo de Clase (TDC) or short “class work” will be on the board, overhead or TV screen as students enter class.  You are expected to put forth a valid effort to receive points for each task—they are not graded on correct or incorrect answers!  The TDC will usually be collected every two weeks, so please keep them safe in a binder or folder until the turn-in date.  Projects will be assigned throughout the course with different and larger responsibilities as the year progresses. Please check the website for homework and TDC postings.

Participation = 20% of the total marking period grade.

To earn all points in this category, you must arrive to class ON TIME, be prepared, participate and practice in SPANISH and English, and complete assignments (oral and written).

Current grades will be posted in the classroom regularly and can be accessed on Zangle.

Make Up Work

Students will have one (1) day to make up work for each day absent.  .  It is your responsibility to find out what work was missed from classmates BEFORE asking the instructor before or after class. Please remember to: Ask 3 before you ask me!   Any handouts or notes you missed will be in the brown folder filed by the corresponding date.   ALL assignments will be posted on the class website. Tests and quizzes need to be made up after school or during lunch.

Extra Help

I am available after school until 3:00 on most days.  Please try to arrange an appointment with me before you come for help.  This is not a time to try to cram in work that you neglected to do before an exam.  The purpose of an after school session is to reinforce a concept that may have given you trouble in class or when you reviewed on your own.  Students can also long on to my website to practice with fun, interactive activities.

Academic Integrity

Dishonesty or cheating will not be tolerated in any fashion at any time.  NO CREDIT will be given for any assignment that is copied (the person who allows the copying is as guilty as the copier!!). Plagiarism is copying someone else’s information word-for-word and treating it as your own.  DO NOT cut and paste information word-for-word from the internet into a report or project without giving credit to the source.  This is stealing!

Using an on-line English-to -Spanish translator for an assignment will result in an AUTOMATIC zero grade.

Classroom Rules

Discipline

I will always try to deal with discipline situations that may arise with the student first.  If after a discussion with a student I feel that a situation is not remedied, I will call home to request the support of a parent or guardian.  Detention will be issued when warnings have been given and not respected.  Severe disruption or insubordination will earn an automatic referral to the administration.
