Poetry Assessment Project

This project requires you to research poems from famous authors as well as create poetry of your own. You must come up with a common theme to tie these pieces together.

Part 1  (15 points) You must have three different authors

1 poem from famous author (not a random person on Yahoo poems!)

1 poem from a minority author

1 song lyric (must be school appropriate)

Part 2  (30 points)

Create four poems of differing genres of poetry from the list below. You may only use each genre once.

Haiku                           Cinquain

Free Verse                  Shape

Limerick                    Catalog/List

Emotion                     Repetition

For part 2, you must apply the writer’s craft techniques discussed class to any of the poems you choose to do from the list above.  You must have one example of each of the following somewhere in the four poems you’ve created: alliteration, rhyme scheme, imagery, personification, simile/metaphor, and onomatoepia.  Each writer’s craft technique must be used once but may be used more if desired.

Part 3  (15 points)

Answer the following questions and include it with your poems. It must be typed and follow the class format.

  1. What theme comes across in the poems you’ve found and written?  Why is this theme important?  This reflection component is very important. Be sure you put a great deal of thought into what you write. Minimum of 1 pg typed
  2. Which created piece is your favorite and why?  You must attach an additional copy of your favorite poem that you have written. (Yes, you will have two copies of the same poem in your project.)

Part 4  (5 points)

Include a table of contents identifying the title of the poem and the genre of poetry.  The poems must appear in the order they are listed.  Please submit the project in a professional, orderly and creative manner. Parts of the points in this section are based on creativity.

Example of Table of Contents:
