Independent Novel Analysis Options

 

Directions:  Choose any combination of activities from the list provided totaling 40 points. Fill out the rubric stating the activities chosen and the points possible and turn in with your project.  Typed portion of the project should be done in Times New Roman, 12 pt font and double spaced.

 

5 POINT OPTIONS:

 

Map:  Draw a map of where the story takes place and label all of the important places. On a separate sheet of paper, explain how the places were used in the novel. It must be in color.

 

Vocabulary Log:  Choose 15 words that you do not know the meaning of and write the definition. Write quote from the book that uses the word and the page number. Typed

 

Quiz:  Create a quiz for the novel that includes 20 multiple choice questions, and 5 short answer questions.  You must include an answer key. Typed

 

Illustration:  Create an illustration for a scene in the novel. It must be in color and done with artistic quality (ie: no stick figures). It must be done with a skill level where it could actually be included in another publishing of the book.

 

Review:  Write a newspaper review of the novel as if you were a newspaper columnist.  Do you recommend the book or not?  You may need to read actual reviews to get an idea, however your review must be original. Typed

 

Letter:  Write a letter to the author expressing how you felt about the book.  Ask questions and make comments about the novel’s effect on you.  Be sure to tie in the issues the book addresses.  It should be in proper business letter format. Typed

 

Diary Entries:  Write a series of 5 diary entries based on the viewpoint of one of the characters in your book. The entries must be 4-5 sentences each and in chronological order.

 

10 POINT OPTIONS: (All must be typed)

 

Character Analysis:  Choose a character from your novel and complete a character analysis.  Describe in detail what you think motivates this character.  What are his/her flaws?  Is he/she a sympathetic character? 1 pg min

 

Cultural Connections:  Research a cultural aspect from your book. How does the author’s cultural upbringing, beliefs or society’s stereotyping play a role in the book? 1 pg min

 

Author Study:  Research the author and complete a biographical essay on his/her life and work. 1 pg min.

 

PowerPoint:  Create a PowerPoint presentation on the novel including synopsis, author bio, review, characters, and plot summary.  8 slides min. Print out a copy of your slides to turn in with your project. Email the PP presentation.

 

Alternate Ending:  Write an alternate ending to the novel from the climax to the resolution.  1 ½ min

 

Name Analysis:  Choose three characters from your book and research the meaning of their names.  Include 2 paragraphs for each character (total of 6 paragraphs) explaining why the name is suitable or unsuitable for that character.

 

Character Connections:  Draw connections between a character from the book and a character from something we have studied in class. How are these characters similar? How are they different? 1 pg

 

Plot Summary:  Write a plot summary of your novel.  It should be 1 1/2 to 2 pages in length. Include information on the meaning of the title, setting, who is telling the story, what is the central conflict, what is the climax, how is the conflict resolved, your opinion on the book.
